Starting therapy can feel both hopeful and nerve-wracking — and that’s completely normal.
If you’re reading this, it likely means you’re ready to make a change, even if you’re not sure what that looks like yet. At And Then There Is You – Mental Health Group, we want your first session to feel like a step toward safety, understanding, and genuine connection.
Before Your Session
Our process begins with a brief, virtual intake appointment where we will get to know what brings you to therapy and can answer any questions you have about therapy and our practice.
You’ll also get instructions for your appointment — whether it’s in-person at one of our Florida offices or virtually anywhere in Florida, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Virginia, or Massachusetts through our secure telehealth platform.
During the First Session
Your first session is about getting to know you — not about being “analyzed” or “judged.” Your therapist may ask open-ended questions such as:
- What brought you here at this time?
- What have you already tried to feel better?
- What do you hope therapy can help you with?
It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers. Many clients simply start with, “I just know I don’t want to feel this way anymore.”
You can also ask your therapist anything — about their style, experience, or what future sessions might look like. Therapy is collaborative, not one-sided.
After the Session
You may leave feeling lighter, curious, or even emotional — all of which are normal. Your therapist will discuss next steps, such as scheduling follow-up sessions, exploring goals, or introducing tools for coping and reflection.
Most importantly, you’ll know you have a space where you can be completely yourself, without fear of judgment.
Final Thought
Your first session is not about perfection — it’s about beginning. Whether you’re feeling anxious, uncertain, or hopeful, showing up is the hardest part — and it’s also the start of something meaningful.
If you’re ready to begin, our team at And Then There Is You – Mental Health Group would be honored to walk beside you.
